Ericka's Double Battle: I Lost My Health and Job Due to Long Covid, and Now I'm Alone in Milan

My name is Ericka, I am 49 years old, and Milan has been my home for almost 30 years. I am originally from Colombia, but here I do not have a family network to support me in such a critical time.

In 2020, Covid-19 destroyed my life and my independence.

While working as an employee in a multinational company, I contracted the virus. What should have been a temporary illness turned into Long Covid, a debilitating and chronic condition that led me to lose everything:

My Health: Today, I live with severe and disabling conditions, officially recognized with civil disability. Chronic fatigue, constant pain, and cognitive problems compromise my independence and the possibility of living with dignity every day. Unfortunately, to date, Long Covid still has no definitive cure.

My Job: Due to prolonged positivity and my reduced working capacity, I was laid off. At 49, after a lifetime of contributions, I find myself without a profession, without a job, and with severely compromised health. Alone in Milan, my only source of income is a disability pension, which is insufficient to cover essential expenses, especially urgent medical ones.

Why I Am Asking for Your Help:

Fundraising Goals

This fundraiser is an act of extreme necessity to cover costs that the State alone cannot sustain. I don't just want to survive; I want to receive treatment with dignity and take back control of my life.

The funds will be used for two crucial areas:

1. Urgent Care and Therapies for Long Covid (Absolute Priority)

Medical Expenses: Specialist visits, urgent tests, and consultations to monitor and manage my conditions.

Medication and Treatments: Purchase of medications not covered by the National Health Service and specific rehabilitative treatments to address the effects of Long Covid and prevent the disease from progressing and causing further irreversible damage.

2. Sustenance, Dignity, and Accessibility

Necessary Aids: Purchase of an electric wheelchair and coverage of essential transportation costs to get to therapies.

Home Adaptation: Contributing to the costs of eliminating architectural barriers in the social housing unit I was assigned after a public lottery —a fundamental step to ensure my autonomy and allow me to focus on treatment.

Legal Expenses: Costs to protect and to access to my rights in relation to the work injury and civil disability.
